THE HEARTBREAK KID,
SHAWN MICHAELS

The Heartbreak Kid spent the early part of his career on anything but his best behaviour. Shawn Michaels has admitted to being a drug and alcohol user and abuser, to the very extreme. Somewhere in his career, Shawn found God. Shawn had been brought up Catholic, but as many Catholics, didn't see it as a huge part of his life. Now, his faith has become a massive aspect of his life, personality, and career. This wasn't so much a conversion as it was a new look at Christianity, and it changed Shawn entirely, giving him a new outlook on his career, and life in general (Mathewson 2015). Shawn held his religion very close to his heart, and although he continued to wrestle throughout the most vulgar period in WWE history, Shawn remained true to himself and true to his faith. Shawn his pedestal in the WWE to his advantage, to show the world what being a Christian was all about. During Shawn's run with Degeneration X, a faction with Triple H that was anything but orthodox, if Shawn had to be involved in a scene that offended him or that was not in line with his beliefs, he simply left the scene and allowed Triple H to handle the vulgarity (Michaels 2014, 7). Shawn entered the ring before every match and fell on his knees in prayer on the entry ramp, midway to the ring. Shawn truly felt gratuitous only to God for everything he had achieved in his lifetime, and used every oppourtunity he could to show how thankful he was, not only by praying in private, but by praying for all the world to see (Michaels 2014, 5).

You can see Shawn's gratitude towards God shine through in his retirement speech from 2012 on Monday Night Raw.
