THE KING OF KINGS

Triple H has been referred to in one of this gimmick runs as the "King of Kings." Though not a specifically religious gimmick, the persona is absolutely dredged in Christian allusion and symbolism. The title "King of Kings" which is featured prominently in his entrance theme music is a title which is also applied to Jesus Christ. The "King of Kings" in Christianity is the Messiah, the one who will come to overthrow every earthly king and usher in a new era of eternal life at the eschaton. In the context of wrestling, the title implies power and dominance over all the other wrestlers in the company (or owners of other promotions, as Triple H has taken over the WWE following the retirement of its founder, Vince Macmahon).
Triple H's ring gear (his wrestling get-up) is laden with heraldic crosses, the Christian symbol representing Christ's crucifixion, ressurrection and the Holy Trinity. He wears a crown with a dastardly skull mask on his face, and is draped by doting maidens in a robe. He often sits on an awfully scary looking throne while doing his best to look terrifying and menacing. These mannerisms can be parralelled to instances in Christian scripture which led up to the crucifixion. Jesus was draped in a robe, a symbol of royalty, by Roman soldiers and mocked for being the "King of the Jews" (Mark 15:18). He was crowned in a dreadful crown of thorns before his crucifixion (Matthew 27:29). Though not quite as painful, Triple H's mask is leaning towards the terrifying side of expression. Jesus was followed by a group of faithful discipled throughout his entire life, some of whom were women, as Triple H is also followed. Finally, following the resurrection, Jesus is said to sit on an "awful throne" at the right hand of God the Father (Mark 16:19). "Awful" in the Biblical context means "full of awe" and "full of wonder" rather than terrible and horrific (like the throne on which Triple H is often seen). In contrast, where Jesus only commands faith and never submission, Triple H demands submission to his almighty power over the WWE.
